Spiritual Warfare in Marriages part:1

Everyone knows that the institution of marriage is under attack today. The devil is in the details. Actually, that is not true. God is in the details but the devil wants to be and wants to disrupt anything good in our lives. It's concerning that many Christians ignore the reality of spiritual warfare in their lives even when God's word is clear on the topic.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Marriage is the fertile ground for the enemy to wage war. It is the one place we are most transparent and tested. The bonding of a marriage relationship comes with loads of friction. This friction comes from inside and outside the home.

The Enemy's Attack Against Marriage

The first shots fired against marriage occurred in the very beginning. God created a perfect universe, a perfect environment, and then placed our first parents into that magnificent environment: a beautiful garden, and a daily walk with God the Creator Himself. Who could ask for anything more? But into this perfect scene the evil one descended, casting doubt about God's sincerity, care, concern, and provision. And down through the centuries, his tactics haven't changed. That is why Jesus called Satan "a murderer from the beginning, a liar and the father of lies and the ruler of this world".

John 8:44 (NIV)

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The enemy's attack is focused against the Trinity, but in order to effectively accomplish such a bold assault, he focuses on God's people in general and the Christian home in particular.

Paul had laid out all of the various relationships to which God calls His people, including marriage and family, he pointed us to the ultimate undermining force behind all of the conflicts we encounter with relationships.

Ephesians 6:10-12 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

You see, there is an invisible war going on at all the time. And if the enemy's assaults are successful, then our marriages will not reflect the image of God, nor reign with God. So, then our primary struggle is not primarily with our spouses, it is with the spiritual forces organized against God and His people in the invisible realm.

The enemy is at work day and night, seeking to undermine and overthrow all the good things that God is trying to accomplish in the world. This enemy launches his total arsenal against the institute of marriage in order to divide and conquer, seeking to prove to the onlooking world that God is a fraud and that His program of love and grace is really a sham and will ultimately end in complete ruin. But God alone will have the last word!

God Bless, Israel
