What is a Christ-centered home? It’s not a home governed by dead, restricting religious rules. Instead, it’s a place where family members live their lives under the covering of the presence of God, where family members speak and act and relate to one another in the awareness that Jesus Christ is an intimately concerned member in everything they do. It’s a household of which it can truly be said, “Christ is the Head of this house, the Unseen Guest, the Silent listener to every conversation.
How does this “Christ-centered home” plays itself out in our everyday life? To a certain extent, it expresses itself differently from situation to situation. Every Christian family, and every Christian, is God’s workmanship and every one of us is unique in every way.
Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Here are some common characteristics we can expect to find in a true Christ-centered home.
Joy is characteristic of a truly Christian-centered Home.
Joy and happiness are not necessarily the same thing. Happiness is a result of what happens to us, Joy has deeper roots. Every marriage and every family will experience trials and hardships of various kinds. There should be no circumstance that can rob us of our joy if we know that the key to our present welfare and future destiny lies in Christ Jesus alone.
A Christian-centered home is orderly.
1 Corinthians 14:33 (NKJV)
For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
The dictatorship and chaos of this world must be required to stay outside of your home. The members of the household should regularly review everything that’s allowed in your home. Ask yourself, Should it stay? Does it build up the family? Does it encourage your family to value one another?
A Christ-centered home should be marked by Grace.
Home should be a safe place to mess up. Family members need that place of grace to heal the wounds of their hearts. They need to remember that love, not perfection, is the goal. There’s enough hostility, judgment, mockery, and bullying out in the world. Home should be a retreat where the hurt can find comfort, where you can find rest and healing.
A Christian-centered home is a place of Service.
Its atmosphere is tempered and flavored with acts of kindness, respect, humility, and love. This is where husbands and wives discover that serving each other in Christ needs to be primary.
A Christ-centered home is a place where Spiritual disciplines are practiced.
It should provide an environment where every member of the family learns how to live by studying the Word of God, Praying, Fasting, and also spending time alone in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
A Christian-centered home is based on God’s purposes for every member of the household.
It’s a place where the family’s goals are founded upon Godly values and where the shared vision for the future is consistent with God’s plan for all of your lives.
I pray that this word has been helpful as we all struggle through the ups and downs of family living.
God Bless, Israel
